Jack Soman is a self-taught American artist living and working in California

He began his career in art by experimenting with redwood, creating intricate sculptures from the environment around him. At this same time he began showing at various west coast galleries and institutions. As Jack's success increased so did his appetite for larger mediums. He promptly established a new larger studio for himself in Bolinas California. Here he had the space and tools to work with such mediums as stone and marble. This culminated in Jack’s masterpiece, a six hundred pound untitled marble sculpture. The artwork took five years to render and is made from a single block of Portuguese marble. It currently resides at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento California.

Below is a short documentary on the creation of the untitled piece

“Jack’s art is a commitment to clarity of form, though his surfaces show a great struggle, it appears effortless in its render.”
